Suicide Down to Zero was set up in April 2014 as an independent
organisation to campaign for an end to suicide in our District. We
became a recognized charity in May 2015.
We currently have seven board members that include suicide survivors, people
with backgrounds in helping professions and suicide attempt
survivors. Collectively our Board has a wealth of knowledge, skills
and experience together with particular beliefs about suicide and its
prevention.
Our beliefs
∙We refuse to accept the unacceptable number of suicide deaths
∙Suicide is preventable not inevitable.
∙Suicide is a public health issue not a mental health one- mental
illness and suicide are related but not synonymous.
∙The only way to prevent suicide is to talk about it, openly and
directly.
∙Telling suicidal people to get help is not enough. We must be
trained and learn how to identify when they need help and
then actively provide it.
Geographical area
Our focus is the Newry Mourne and Down Council area. With the
help of two local councillors, Newry Mourne and Down council
adopted a suicide down to zero approach in the District in 2019.
