Active in the Community will be a stimulating, information-packed, 2-day event for everyone who works in the community / voluntary sector in Northern Ireland. Practical help and encouragement will be on offer through 2 days of Seminars and the wide range of relevant resources on display at over 80 stands which make up the Exhibition Halls.

Key Note Address

Yorkshireman Steve McDermott will present an inspirational Key Note address ‘When The Going Gets Tough!’. Steve is probably the best motivational speaker in the world, having been voted UK Motivational Speaker of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Steve's presentations not only make people think but also laugh. In over twenty years as a professional speaker he has talked to thousands of people about how they can be more successful in life and business. It's his unique style - half business guru, half stand-up comedian - which has made him one of Europe's busiest and most sought after speakers. If you enjoy having fun then you'll love Steve's approach. This down to earth Yorkshire man is an inspiration to his audiences and his simple straight forward ideas really do work.

Vision Seminars

4 ‘Vision’ seminars will suggest how local communities can mobilize their people and resources to tackle areas of economic and social concern:

Debra Green, Director of Manchester-based ROC, will highlight the opportunities and benefits which arise when statutory agencies and community groups work together in Partnership.

Jonathan McAlpin, Director of Operations for the Ulster Community Investment Trust, will present on the vital role played by Social Enterprise in empowering communities and helping them become more productive.

John News (Participation Manager, Sport Northern Ireland) will discuss the various positive outcomes of engaging local communities in Sport and Physical Activity programmes. John will present the SNI Active Communities programme - and give practical advice on how you and your community can get involved and enjoy the benefits of being physically active.

Billy Eagleson of Volunteer Now will introduce us to ‘Timebanking’ - and explain how the Timebanking concept can be adapted to support and empower communities and organisations in Northern Ireland.

Strategic and Resources Presentations

A programme consisting of a further 20 presentations will be divided into 2 streams – ‘Strategic’ and ‘Resources’. Delegates will benefit from a wealth of local experience as speakers tackle ‘strategic’ issues which impact on the viability and growth of voluntary groups e.g. organisation ethos, governance, funding etc.

Those responsible for planning their group’s annual programme will find huge inspiration through the ‘resources’ presentations which will highlight material and information specific to many areas of work e.g. youth, elderly, health, education etc.

Exhibition Halls

At a time when ‘every penny counts’, visitors will want to take advantage of the offers and special deals available from exhibitors at Active in the Community. In addition to a range of products and services on display, the exhibition hall will present a host of published material, books, leaflets, information dvds and resources etc. A number of local charities and social enterprise groups will also be exhibiting.

Networking

Active in the Community will be a time to help, inspire and encourage one another. The comfortable surroundings of The Ramada Hotel make it an ideal place to enjoy a coffee and chat with friends and colleagues. AIC delegates will be encouraged to make the most of this opportunity to engage with others involved in community life – and have a good time!
