The Bible has much to say about God’s love for Creation and our shared responsibility to care for the earth, our home. Yet our common home is in danger. The crisis we face is due principally to our failure to see the connections that bind us to each other as family, and to our planet as home. Unpacking this simple yet revolutionary idea, and drawing out the implications for action, will be Dr Lorna Gold, Chair of the Laudato Si’ Movement. In her book, Climate Generation – Awakening To Our Children’s Future, Lorna takes an unflinching look at the threats posed by climate change for future generations and how we can respond. Her work with the Laudato Si’ Movement equips both the Catholic Church and those who share their concerns about climate change to deepen their understanding of environmental issues and take positive action. Expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired. There will also be music from Cork songwriter Clare Sands who is adding something creative and imaginative to the trad song. Her envelope pushing eponymous debut album blends and blurs musical genres, subject matter and the very languages themselves.

Our annual In Conversation event sees Steve Stockman talking to songwriter Anthony Toner and artist/playwright/director Andrea Montgomery. With this year’s theme of Home?, Anthony was an obvious choice. He has written songs about his own childhood home, growing up on Coleraine’s Harpur’s Hill estate and an entire album, Six Inches Of Water about East Belfast. His partner Andrea Montgomery is an experienced writer, script editor and producer. She has worked on four continents, from Ireland to China, Greenland to Iran. Born in Delhi but Canadian and now making a home in East Belfast she’ll have lot to say about home. There will be music and art to enjoy also.

This is an invitation-only event delivered in partnership with Ulster University. Sixth form students from across Belfast will gather at Ulster University, Belfast campus to explore the power of songwriting to convey personal and community experiences, and connect people from different backgrounds through a shared passion for music. Facilitated by two-time Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter Iain Archer (Hold Back The River with James Bay; Final Straw with Snow Patrol), the event will offer participants opportunities to develop their own writing skills, exchange ideas with peers in a safe space and collaborate with Iain on an original work to be premiered at the 4 Corners Festival. Originally from Bangor, and a graduate of Ulster University, Iain will guide the students through an examination of perspectives on home that will inform their collaborative work. Belfast-based sixth-form pupils who are interested in this event should contact the Festival via their school. Please note that there are a limited number of places per school.

Since 2013, the Ubuntu Festival has celebrated the vibrant, multi-cultural diversity of our local community.   While it is not possible to run the festival this year due to the pandemic, Derry City and Strabane District Council is taking the opportunity to reflect on the success of the festival – and explore how we can build on this for the future.
