SilenceBreaker Media aims to reduce waste by collecting and rebuilding used computers for the benefit of disadvantaged communities–providing them with low-cost, ethical computers and training for them to get online, and get communicating using multimedia.
SilenceBreaker Media have three clear aims:
connect people via technology
save waste
make media technology materials available at low cost
To achieve our aims, we undertake the following activities:
Collecting, reconditioning and refurbishing used computer hardware and installing with appropriate ethical, free open source software for re-use, then providing these low-cost computers primarily to the third sector and people on low income.
Running projects, predominately in disadvantaged areas, that provide participants with social media skills and employment/life skills tailored to the groups involved; all active project beneficiaries become 'SilenceBreakers' – gaining a recognised certification of participation.
SilenceBreaker Media's social network, The Intersection, enables 'SilenceBreakers' and communities to connect with each other and the wider public.
Campaign for and promote net neutrality/freedom.
Producing annual triple bottom line social accounts of SilenceBreaker Media's activities/projects.
We have just procured a venue in Shalesmoor, Sheffield, to develop a media lounge and community space, where we will be extending our activities to include:
Providing on-site access to the internet and computer resources like printing alongside access to print-based resources, such as journals, magazines and books.
Providing workshops on social media and computer training/reconditioning and other employability-based skills.
Hiring out media materials.
