"Ze Germans" are coming...Comprehensive German course at Conway Education Centre

Fáilte Feirste Thiar has teamed up with Conway Education Centre to offer those involved in the local tourism and hospitality industry a unique learning opportunity!

As German visitors continue to flock to West Belfast and as Germany is Irelands largest tourism-generating market from Mainland Europe its vital that we ensure visitors receive a warm welcome worth talking about!

With this in mind, a specially tailored 20 hour introductory course has been developed to cater for the needs of the local industry that will explore German language, culture, customs and traditions.  

The course will be delivered free of charge in Conway Education Centre (5-7 Conway Street, Belfast BT13 2DE) on a Thursday afternoon from 2-4pm and will run for 10 weeks beginning on 19th of April.

Comprehensive German Course at Conway Education Centre

The course offers:

a basic knowledge of the German language and a profound understanding of German customs / manners.

The course comprises

• vocabulary
  – pronunciation and reading practice
  – basic conversation in every-day situations

  – the use of verbs, articles, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions
  – the construction of basic sentences
  – the three main tenses used in German
  – the three main cases
  – questions and answers
  
  
• intensive free-talk training
  – dialogues, speeches, presentation of various topics
  
  
• introduction into German customs, manners, behaviour, ways of thinking
• information about contemporary Germany

General Topics:

• Average life in Germany: school system, jobs, family
• Germans and religion
• Germans and politics
• Different characteristics of various German states
• Other countries / regions speaking German dialects

Specific Topics:

• How to greet a German without offending him – the dos and don`ts
• The two ways of addressing Germans: „Du“ vs. „Sie“ – which is appropriate?
• „The Germans don`t have any sense of humour!“ - Right or wrong?
• Punctuality - the 5 to 10-minute rule
• Invitations - a serious matter for Germans
• Impatience - a German disease
• Queueing - the greatest challenge for a German
• Value for money - always a topic for Germans
