WOMAD Summer Schemes - Belfast (call for participant groups)

Officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the World's Biggest International Music Festival, WOMAD was founded by rock icon Peter Gabriel in 1982, when he thought of a concert involving artists from Africa. The idea later bloomed into a vision of a much larger event incorporating music from all over the world.

Since then WOMAD concerts have taken place in 21 different countries presenting some 2,000 international artists playing to a live audience of over 1 million.

On behalf of WOMAD, Northern Ireland based peacebuilding world arts organisation, Beyond Skin, are delivering an outreach programme to use world music, arts and dance to bridge cultural relations, promote cultural learning and create a legacy of a peaceful, confident and shared society.

Following on the success of the Creative Legacies WOMAD schools outreach programme, Beyond Skin in partnership with WOMAD are now rolling out the summer schemes leading up to the next showcase event on the 30th August 2013 at the Skainos Centre as part of the East Belfast Arts Festival.

Belfast Community youth groups interested in taking part in the Belfast WOMAD summer scheme or who would like more information can contact the Beyond Skin office on 07877756987  or [email protected].

Belfast workshops have been part funded by Belfast City Council Creative Legacies programme supported by the European Regional Development Fund under the PEACE III Programme and East Belfast Policing & Community Safety Partnership.

An OCN qualification has also been developed for the WOMAD outreach programme by Beyond Skin and Northern Ireland Children’s Enterprise. Participants over the age of 15 have the opportunity to gain a level 1 OCN qualification in “Understanding Diversity through the World Of Music, Arts & Dance”.

www.womadbelfast.org  is now online as a hub and archive for all events past and present featuring photos, videos, press releases, testimonials and so much more from every workshop, showcase event and festival. There are other WOMAD websites all over the world – from the UK to New Zealand to Russia.
You can follow WOMADBelfast on Twitter – which links in with all tweets within the WOMAD stratosphere!
