The route to Third Sector Mapping

Extended until 21 September — a new survey commissioned by DETI and DSD is being carried out by PwC in order to 'map' the third sector in Northern Ireland, gaining insight into the size, scale and influence of the third sector on our economy. You can help

How big is the Northern Ireland social enterprise economy and the voluntary and community sector? What contribution does the third sector make to Northern Ireland's economy? How many voluntary and community organisations could grow into Social Economy Enterprises? Help answer these questions by taking part in a new survey.

The Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) and Department for Social Development have appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) to conduct research for Third Sector Mapping.

The purpose of the research is to measure the size and scale of the Northern Ireland social enterprise economy and the community and voluntary sector; assess the contribution of the third sector to the Northern Ireland economy; and to assess the potential of community and voluntary organisations to grow into Social Economy Enterprises (SEEs) and also the potential of SEEs to grow into larger, more established social enterprises with export potential.

PwC will engage with a wide range of interest groups throughout the research, including Government departments, social enterprises and voluntary and community organisations.  This will be carried out through a series of interviews, an online survey of third sector organisations and workshops to discuss key issues emerging from the survey data.

NICVA Chief Executive, Seamus McAleavey, encourages all third sector organisations to take part, commenting:

“This is an important piece of research and the results will be valuable in helping us understand the level of economic activity in our sector.  It will complement NICVA’s State of the Sector reports and will undoubtedly help shape the DETI policy response for providing critical support to social enterprise development.”
