Plant a growing investment: we’ll show you how

Woodland creation demonstration on Wednesday 24 October

Would-be tree planters will receive a wealth of information later this month, courtesy of a special free woodland creation demonstration.  The offer comes from the Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme, and the date for the autumn diary is Wednesday 24October.

Join the team for an indoors introduction at 9.30am at the Rural Area Partnership in Derry (RAPID) premises, located at the Old School, 2 Foreglen Road, Killaloo, L’Derry.  You’ll hear about the help available and grants on offer to get your planting underway.

This is followed by a visit to a private woodland nearParkVillage, owned by Kevin Hickey.  Here renowned forester Tony Johnston will demonstrate various tree planting methods, using a range of planting tools.  Choice of tree species for different terrains, size and quality of trees, ground preparation and use of tree guards are just some of the items on a brimming woodland agenda.

With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Landscape Partnerships, the project aims to restore and enhance the natural and built heritage within the beautifulFaughanValley. Delivered by partners Derry City Council, RAPID and the Woodland Trust, one of the project’s aims is to facilitate the creation of new native woodland.

Landscape officer, Jonathan Henderson, explains: “Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Forest Service, farmers and landowners in the FaughanValleyhave the fantastic offer to turn unproductive pockets of land into flourishing native woodland. On Wednesday the 24th, we’re giving people the opportunity to experience woodland creation first-hand.  It’s a chance to find out about the help, advice and attractive grants on offer.”

According to the Woodland Trust, woodland is a growing and rewarding asset.  It provides a much-needed habitat for wildlife, and shelter and shade vital for the welfare and productivity of livestock.  Trees and woodland also enhance the landscape and improve water and air quality.  And nowadays – with rising energy costs - more and more people are planting for wood fuel.

The woodland creation day is free of charge and includes free refreshments. Booking in advance is essential. Please contact Jonathan Henderson on 028 7133 7498; mobile 0771 869 4172; or email [email protected]
