New Year, New You! Workplace Health Checks with Action Cancer

Leading local cancer charity Action Cancer is kicking off 2016 with their New Year, New You health campaign with the support of local sporting stars.

Tyrone Gaelic Star Sean Cavanagh, Rugby Professional Paddy Jackson and Peterborough United Striker Joe Gormley are encouraging workplaces to ‘Get a Grip’ of their health and avail of Action Cancer workplace and community health programmes this New Year.

Cancer diagnosis in Northern Ireland have been attributed to poor lifestyle choices, such as eating an unhealthy diet and taking less exercise, and reluctance to discuss personal health matters. By not monitoring their health people are at higher chance of not detecting cancer or other serious conditions at an early and, hopefully, more treatable stage. It is known that a healthy workforce increases productivity, reduces absenteeism, improves positivity, improves staff morale and increases job satisfaction.

Gillian Thomson, Action Cancer said, “We are asking workplaces to encourage their employees to get a snap shot of their health in 2016 with help from Action Cancer. It’s important that employers are encouraging a healthy lifestyle and information on cancer awareness. These programmes are a great insight of what to look out for and how to reduce your chances of getting cancer.”

The programmes which include MOT health checks, incorporate a number of assessments including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, facial skin analysis, peak flow measurements and body composition analysis, as well as lifestyle advice and information on testicular and prostate cancers. The checks do not diagnose cancer but aim to increase awareness of current health and the importance of early detection.
