Get in on the action for Cancer Focus
Join up for a sporty fundraiser for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, the new name for the Ulster Cancer Foundation, and get the adrenalin flowing. There are events for every fitness level.
Cancer Focus has linked up with Tri Limits and Chain Reaction Cycles to bring you a special fitness event at Eskragh Lough, Old Ballygawley Road, Dungannon, from 6th-15th July.
You can take part in anything from a short run, swim or bike ride, a relay, or, if you are super fit, sign up for a tough Decaman challenge to raise much needed cash for cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland. Or you can simply come along and lend your support.
The main event is Ireland’s toughest triathlon – the Northern Ireland Decaman Challenge. This involves an amazing adrenalin pumping 2.4 mile swim and a 112 mile cycle followed by a marathon (26.2 miles) – each day for 10 days!
The event is a personal challenge for each participant and will help raise money for the Cancer Focus men’s health campaign. Cancer Focus Fundraising Officer Paul O’Gara said, “There is a challenge for everyone whatever your ability so why not give it a go! Challenge your limits for Cancer Focus.”
Participants can choose one of the following options:
Decaman: Enter the 10 day Northern Ireland Decaman
Decaman Relay Team: A relay team of 3 people in the Northern Ireland Decaman
One Day Challenge: Join in, on a day of your choice
Relay Team: Join in, on a day of your choice, with a relay team of 3 people
Run/Swim/Bike: Register to run, swim or bike your own distance on a day of your choice.
A £20 deposit plus minimum sponsorship is required, for details and online registration click on www.cancerfocusni.org
Paul O’Gara said, “Cancer has a major impact on the health of men in Northern Ireland. Each year around 4,000 men are diagnosed with some form of the disease – that’s a shocking statistic.
“Our men’s health campaign aims to minimise the impact of cancer among men. We bring fitness and health programmes such as smoking cessation clinics and Male Quick Fit checks into workplaces, and have a full range of counselling and support services for men and their families, a confidential helpline, and art and creative writing therapy.
“We would urge everyone to help us raise as much money as possible to continue funding these free services either by taking part in the NI Decaman Challenge or by supporting participants.”
The event is kindly sponsored by Chain Reaction Cycles, High 5, Gatorade, Compressport, ZeroD, Elite Timing (the chosen timing partner for the NI.Decaman Challenge), JJ Ballantine and Co Insurance Services, Performance Nutrition Plus and Awen Sport.
Simon Cordner, PR Manager, Chain Reaction Cycles, said, “Decaman is a tough challenge for super-fit people who want to test their mettle but there are also challenges for people with different levels of fitness and abilities. We hope to see as many of you as possible take up your own challenge at this event and test your personal limits for this great cause.”
