1 Global economy – local community

As the world’s economies are recovering from the global financial crisis the interconnected nature of trade, jobs and information sharing across jurisdictions has never been more apparent. It is clear that globalisation can have significant positive and negative impacts upon our lives and communities and our economy. However, do any of us feel adequately informed or empowered enough to influence it?

NICVA’s Centre for Economic Empowerment’s first masterclass in its new series, on Friday 21 September, 10.00am - 12.30pm, will examine the topic of globalisation and the impact it has on trade, jobs and democracy in regional economies like Northern Ireland’s. Joined by two leading thinkers in the field, the masterclass will further explore the role the voluntary and community sector and civil society currently plays, and potentially should play, in influencing the global economy.

In particular this masterclass will examine:

  • What impact globalisation has had on regional economies
  • What intergovernmental organisations influence the governance of the global economy
  • What historical role voluntary and community groups and NGOs have had on influencing global governance of the economy
  • How global governance of the economy should change post financial crisis
  • What role voluntary and community groups and NGOs might play
  • What implications this debate has for the way we approach the economy in Northern Ireland.
