Eason launched ‘Learning for Life’ initiative in support of Barnardo’s NI

Northern Ireland’s largest retailer of books, stationery, news and magazines, Eason, today donated €20,000 to children’s charity Barnardo’s as part of a new partnership aimed at boosting children’s literacy levels.

The donation, which will be shared between Barnardo’s NI and Barnardos Ireland, is being funded through Eason’s loyalty card programme with a contribution made by the retailer on behalf of each loyalty card holder registered within the last 12 months.

The partnership called ‘Learning for Life’ will work with children aged 5-12 to help them to fulfill their potential at school and improve their ability to learn by supporting a range of Barnardo’s NI education programmes including literacy, confidence building, homework clubs and after school assistance. As part of the initiative Eason’s will also be running a number of reading events in store.

Eason Head of Marketing and Retail Development David Field said the partnership would build on Eason’s already huge commitment to supporting literacy, “Our Learning for Life partnership is a further extension of our already existing and successful Get Into Reading campaign which highlights the importance of parents and guardians taking the time to read to children and our annual school Spelling Bee competition.   We are delighted to support Barnardos in the important work that they do through its range of centres around the country.”

Director Barnardo’s NI Lynda Wilson said, “We are excited that Eason has chosen to support our educational work through its Learning for Life programme. Barnardo’s believes that education is one of the best ways for children and young people to overcome early disadvantage and grow up with strong aspirations and prospects for future employment. Eason’s commitment to helping raise educational achievement mirrors our own and we are delighted to be working with them on this partnership.”

In addition to the launch donation of €20,000 Eason also plans to hold a series of in-store fundraising events.
