Discover the hidden gems of Oakfield Glen

Special woodland invitation: Saturday 15 March, 11am to 1pm

Oakfield Glen in Carrickfergus is opening its leafy doors for a magical woodland celebration on Saturday 15 March.

The Woodland Trust’s County Antrim wood is unveiling a new look, made possible thanks to grant-aid of £17,000 from the NGO Challenge Fund 2014.

Oakfield Glen was once a countryman’s residence, built in the early 1800s.  While there are no traces of the house itself, reminders of days gone by include magnificent specimen trees and an old ice house, which has now been uncovered and restored to its former glory.

Visitors should also keep a look out for some special new inhabitants.  The mischievous fairy-like creatures – ten in total – will be hiding in the treetops throughout the woodland.  The crafty creations are actually steel sculptures, created by sculptors Alan Cargo and Eleanor Wheeler, with input from Acorn Integrated Primary and Oakfield Primary School.

The adventure begins from Oakfield Community Centre, where renowned storyteller Liz Weir will be waiting to lead you on a guided walk in search of our fairy friends.  Sculptors Alan and Eleanor will be on-hand to discuss their magical creations and will hold free clay sculpture workshops between 11am and 1pm.

Michelle McCaughtry, the Woodland Trust’s people engagement officer, says:  “We are delighted to have the chance to show-off the recent additions to Oakfield Glen. It’s the most beautiful old woodland, with a charming burn and Victorian stone bridge.  We’re inviting people to join us on Saturday 15 March, but please do get in touch beforehand to secure your place.”  She continues: “We’re extremely grateful to the NGO Challenge Fund for making this special event and the works on site possible.”

To find out more or to book a place(s) at this free event please contact Michelle McCaughtry on 028 9127 5787 or email [email protected]  Places are limited and children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.
