Beyond Skin CEO to attend Colombian conference as Peace agreement is reached

Darren Ferguson founder & CEO of Beyond Skin has been invited by Fundación Nacional Batuta in association with the British Council & the Ministry of Culture to be a guest speaker at the International Seminar on Music & Social Transformation in Colombia.

This is the first time this event will be held in to Colombia, taking place 4th to 7th October .

The main purpose is to discuss the transformational power of music in people and countries in situations of vulnerability, allowing dialogues among artists and cultural managers around the world.

Ending  five decades of war  a monumental peace agreement was reached Monday 26th September.

The ceremony, held in Cartagena, brought an end to a 52-year-old war with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, whose Marxist insurgency marked the last major war in the Americas. On Sunday 2nd October (as Darren arrives) the people of Colombia will vote on the agreement.

Darren Ferguson said“I feel very privileged to be invited to Colombia during this historic time. I have been contacted by a lot of Colombian press agencies and there is much excitement about my visit as many people are seeing similarities regarding the Northern Ireland Good Friday Agreement. The success of Beyond Skin projects  in peacebuilding , especially Music Unite Access All Areas, WOMADNI and our international Sri Lankan project “ Parallel Versing “ with The Music Project organization is also generating a lot of interest. From my experience in Northern Ireland and across the world, Music is the most powerful tool enabling us as Global Citizens to develop, learn, share, communicate, address racism, sectarianism and the legacy of conflict. I very much look forward to sharing my experiences and meeting the people of Colombia who have inspired the world with this achievement towards Peace"

Whilst in Colombia Darren will be meeting with fellow United Network of Young Peace Builders (UNOY) member Fundacion Escuelas de Paz .  Darren will also meet grassroots organisations to share learning and to explore development of Beyond Skin projects supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
