The awards recognise the outstanding contribution that a new generation of campaigners are making towards achieving social, environmental and economic justice here in the UK.

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK), the UK's only charity dedicated to connecting, informing and supporting campaigners, has opened the application process for the SMK Campaigner Awards 2012.

The awards recognise and celebrate some of the people who, across the UK, work tirelessly on the ground taking action on issues that matter. The award programme helps winners to develop effective and successful campaigns through a tailored package of support.

People can apply or nominate by visiting our website: http://www.smk.org.uk/campaigner-awards/

Worldwide we have witnessed campaigners come to the fore. From the Arab Spring and Occupy to campaigns such as 'Save Our Forests', people have been successful in creating discussion, fostering debate and creating transformations. The SMK Campaigner Awards are well placed at a time when grassroots action is so prominent in our society today.

Linda Butcher, Chief Executive of SMK, said:

"At a time when campaigners across the globe are taking action on issues they care about, it is extremely important to recognise the people who tackle the injustices and inequalities we face in our society. The most effective campaigners are not always those who are most visible to us. They are many people from all walks of life who care deeply about an issue or a problem, and have great ideas about how to make things better. The SMK Campaigner Awards are there to celebrate and support those people".
