Local girl, Alex McCook (age 7) from Bushmills, County Antrim, was today announced the winner of Rural Support’s ‘Spring on the Farm’ colouring competition.
Farming charity Rural Support, alongside its CSR partner, Simple Power, hosted the competition, which aimed to help raise awareness of its important service during the Spring period.
The seven year old, who attends eco-friendly Dunseverick Primary School, won a packed chocolate hamper after entering the competition through the Rural Support website. Alex is conscious of how renewable energy can benefit the rural community through learning at her school, which holds an Eco-Schools Green Flag and is dedicated to incorporating environmental issues into every part of the curriculum.
Rural Support Director, Jude McCann said: “Alex’s entry was clearly the stand-out winner as it colourfully reflected her views on life on the farm. We hoped, by asking young competitors to illustrate their view of a farm during the Spring period, the competition would highlight the work of the farming community during what is often one of the busiest times of the year for farmers. With the longer days, longer hours and the end of the financial year bringing additional stress, we want all families and businesses to know assistance is available if needed through our confidential helpline – 0845 606 7 607.”
Rural Support is a local charity committed to helping farming and rural communities across Northern Ireland. It provides support for farmers and rural families through the helpline, offering a listening and signposting service. It deals with a range of issues including emotional distress, suicide risk, physical and mental health, farming paperwork and bureaucracy. The charity has also launched a project focusing on financial stress, aimed at those experiencing debt or financial issues relating to the farm business.
Rural Support is working with its CSR partner, local wind energy company, Simple Power, on campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of health and wellbeing in rural communities and farm families. Simple Power works in partnership with farmers across Northern Ireland and is committed to an on-going partnership with the local charity, providing financial support alongside awareness-raising and fundraising activities.
