Youth Support Worker In Charge

Youth Support Worker in Charge (YSWIC) will have responsibility for and actively support HFT’s Youth Work programmes including leading project staff members and volunteers and the implementation of HFT’s policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities                   

With reference to all HFT policies and procedures, the YSWIC will be expected to carry out the following:

Managing and developing a range of services within the Youth Project

  • Work directly with young people by assessing their needs and providing an agreed programme of activities designed to meet those needs, in line with the Youth Service Curriculum for Northern Ireland, HFT’s Project priorities and funder requirements.
  • Facilitate and play an active leadership role in weekly youth club, drop-in, online provision and outreach sessions for young people, aged 9 – 19; including acting-up when the Youth Team Leader is not present.
  • Communicate effectively and develop substantial relationships with a wide range of young people with various needs and from different backgrounds.
  • In consultation with the Youth Team Leader plan, develop, facilitate and evaluate programmes, specifically for young people to address their needs, ensuring project objectives are achieved.
  • Help young people to express their goals, develop positive pathways of development and realise their full potential.
  • Facilitate young people to work effectively on their own and in peer groups
  • Provide information, support and sign-posting to young people
  • In consultation with the Youth Team Leader ensure that project objectives are achieved through implementation, monitoring and evaluation of agreed work programmes.
  • Develop quality assurance processes to support effective delivery of programmes.
  • Encourage young people to broaden their horizons through new opportunities and contribute towards their own community and society
  • Motivate and support young people to play an active role in the project, within our models of youth participation.
  • Support young people to understand personal risks and adverse experiences, help them to act to effectively address these issues in their lives.
  • Take a lead in managing challenging behaviour, set boundaries and work to keep young people engaged.
  • Attend regular team meetings, brief/debriefs and training along with the Youth Team Leader, other youth support staff and volunteers.
  • Carry out allocated administration tasks for the youth project as set by the Youth Team Leader including finances, filing and record keeping.
  • Actively lead setting up and clearing physical spaces (including equipment) for youth work activities.
  • Competent use of necessary equipment.
  • Follow cleaning procedures.
  • Ensure the safety and active participation of young people in youth work programmes and in the management of the Club.
  • Engage where appropriate in outreach or detached youth work programmes within the designated area.
  • Carry out such duties, as may be assigned by their Line Manager, within the level of the post.
  • Encourage and participate in the residential and outdoor education elements of the programme.
  • Promote and develop inter-community activities.
  • Be responsible to the line manager for all management, administration and financial matters relevant to the Youth Project.
  • Engage in appropriate fund raising related directly to the programme.

Developing staff and facilities

  • Work with staff and volunteers to develop, implement, manage and evaluate programmes of activities, services and facilities in line with the agreed priorities for the Club.
  • Ensure the induction, motivation, development, training, deployment and discipline of Youth Club staff and volunteers.

Leading project development and implementation within the Youth Project

  • In line with agreed priorities design and implement specific curriculum related projects and programmes.

Management responsibility for staff within the Youth Project

  • Supervise appropriate staff, including the management and allocation of duties.
