Director: The John Hewitt Society

The John Hewitt Society

Senior Appointments
£26,000 - £28,000
37.50
The John Hewitt Society provides opportunities for people from Northern Ireland and elsewhere to experience all types of culture from literature to the visual arts as well as political debate, and thereby to explore issues of difference and identity.

The John Hewitt Society seeks to appoint a Director.

The Society’s current strategic aims:

  • Consolidate the reputation of the John Hewitt Society as Northern Ireland’s main literary organisation with an artistic reach across the region and beyond.
  • Continuously improve the John Hewitt International Summer School as Northern Ireland’s main literary event.
  • Develop new audiences, including through the expansion of community outreach initiatives, to build a more diverse audience, reflective of the wider regional society.

At time of writing The Society is setting priorities for the company strategic plan 2019 – 2021. The Director will manage the next stage in The John Hewitt Society’s development.

The Director’s overall role is to deliver the Society’s strategy on a day to day basis. The postholder reports to the Society’s governing bodies – its Board and Committee – and works closely with both. In addition, the Director advises on policy and strategy and is therefore well-placed to shape the Society’s development.

The successful candidate will join the Society at an important and stimulating time in its development and will therefore steer the organisation through its next phase of growth. They will be responsible for the Society’s operational and strategic management and for financial management and fundraising. Their duties will also take in oversight of policy, operational delivery of all projects, developmental work, and a range of engagement activities, including with stakeholders, sponsors and other arts organisations.

Location: The Society’s offices, currently in the Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC), in Belfast city centre.

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)

Salary: £26,000 - £28,000 (based on experience) plus contributory pension.

Contract: This is a permanent full-time position. A probationary period of six months will apply.
