Making the Future will see a consortium of leading cultural organisations – Nerve Centre, NMNI, PRONI and Linen Hall Library – deliver an exciting £1.5million cross-community programme of cultural engagement, creativity and skills development.
5,000+ participants will interrogate and re-imagine consortium collections through the creative arts and digital technologies. Results will be viewed by 100,000+ people who will participate in exhibitions, events and workshops.
The project will bring participants together in consortium spaces, community centres, museums, venues, libraries and community cinemas across Northern Ireland and in border counties of the Republic of Ireland.
The project will deliver exhibitions, events, learning resources and digital content exploring social and cultural themes across nine interlinked strands:
- Culture Lab: Making the Future
- Troubles Art
- Partition
- Creative Centenaries
- Women in the Archives
- 100 Shared Stories
- Conflict to Peace
- Cultural Fusion
- Making the Future Oral Archive
The Community Engagement Officer (NMNI) will be responsible for delivering community engagement activities in the following project strands, as well as contributing to the wider programme as required:
- Culture Lab: Making the Future
A major interactive, participatory museum experience at the Ulster Museum, co-produced by participants via a cross-community engagement programme, exploring identity within context of Irish history. The centrepiece exhibition will be in the largest gallery space in the museum, including interactive elements, art, objects, and digital projections, and accompanied by an Events & Learning programme. A smaller version of the exhibition will tour border venues, accompanied by community engagement programmes.
- Troubles Art
The Troubles Art exhibition will bring together art works reflecting on the Troubles, featuring more than 25 artists including Paul Seawright, Willie Doherty, Rita Duffy and Jack Pakenham. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculpture from NMNI's collections. It will be housed initially in the new Nerve Visual gallery in Buildings Eighty81 on Ebrington, a former military barracks and the location of the Turner Prize during City of Culture 2013.
Troubles Art will explore themes of violence and destruction, suffering and loss, traditions and life in the midst of turmoil. The exhibition will offer an avenue for exploring the ways in which the Troubles have been viewed by a range of artists and for reflecting upon the impact of violence and division on our community.
The exhibition will launch at Nerve Visual, accompanied by a cross-community engagement programme, a cross-community, accredited FabLab Artist-Maker Apprenticeship Scheme led by a local artist, which will train NEETS in digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting, and an Events & Learning programme. The exhibition will then tour 4 border venues north and south, accompanied by a cross-community engagement programme.
- Partition
A photographic exhibition exploring the Partition of Ireland in 1921, drawing on archival material and representations by artists of the border regions. Accompanied by a cross-community engagement programme and production of a Partition learning resource. The exhibition will launch at the Ulster Museum before touring border venues, accompanied by cross-community engagement programmes.
