Understanding Advocacy - OCN Level 2

Belfast Recovery College
This course aims to help us understand the basic principles and the process of
advocacy whether it is for advocating for yourself or acting as an advocate. The
course will look at the effect of disempowering experiences on an individual’s life
and the positive impact the advocacy process can have for individual’s and for staff.
You will learn the communication and assertiveness skills required to be a good
advocate and what types of support individuals need to express themselves. A
good relationship in the advocacy process is key so you will learn how to develop
an advocacy partnership, know how it differs from other relationships and how to
recognise and manage conflict situations.
