COVID CONVERSATIONS - Pandemic and Brexit: Weathering the Perfect Storm

Human Rights Consortium

In Northern Ireland, we have been so deeply engrossed in coping with a global pandemic unlike any other in our lifetimes that Brexit had almost become a distant memory. However, Brexit has reared its head once more, and the threat of a ‘no deal’ still lies before us, with special arrangements in relation to Northern Ireland remaining a familiar sticking point.
We are hurtling towards the end of the transition period on 31st December 2020, and the UK government has made clear that it will not ask for an extension. At the same time, we are bracing for a second wave of the virus – this time during the winter months – and already tighter restrictions are having to be imposed in some areas. How do we withstand this perfect storm?
In this webinar, we will explore some of the areas that will be most vulnerable as we attempt to weather this storm (such as immigration, employment, and human rights). We will also consider how we can effectively band together to protect rights and equality because it is in the shelter of each other that the people live.
