Migrant Centre NI

The Migrant Centre NI's Migrant and Ethnic Minority Peace Builders in Northern Ireland project (funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust) will launch on Tuesday 18 June in Belfast Castle with an event titled 'Colours of Peace: Moving Beyond Orange and Green'. The event will be a mix of talks, workshops and discussions on the theme of diversity in peacebuilding. Colours of Peace is exclusively open to individuals who live in Northern Ireland, are from a migrant and/or ethnic minority community background, and are involved in (paid or voluntary) community development and/or leadership.

Dr. Peter Vermeulen, PhD in Psychology and Clinical Educational Sciences, has more than 35 years of experience in the field of autism. Peter is an internationally respected lecturer, and he presents all over the world. Peter wrote more than 15 books and several articles on autism, some of them translated into more than 10 languages. For his +30 years of work in the field of autism, he received in 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award for his more than 30 years contribution to the autism community in Belgium.

By the end of the course participants will be able to understand the concept of Self-Myofascial Release and the role of fascia within the body and reasons why it becomes tight and understanding the concept of trigger points. Participants will have an understanding of why SMR should be employed as well as when is most beneficial to use SMR. They will also gain an understanding of what happens during SMR within the tissue fibres. Participants will be able to identify suitable equipment to use and know how to perform SMR on various muscles within the body. And finally the participants will know some of the contraindications that would prevent a person from undertaking SMR.

Resistance training has long been a method used to increase athletic capacity in terms of endurance, muscle mass and strength (McGuigan, M., R., 2012). Additionally, there are techniques that are appropriate in developing power in advanced clients and have been shown to be superior to more traditional resistance training techniques (Suchomel, 2017). Selection of these weightlifting techniques for use as an advanced training modality in power production have shown to be effective in clients and should be implemented (Tricoli, V., et al 2005).
