A Man's World - Photo Pack

Man Matters has just published 'A Man's World' a photo pack containing images of men which can be used in group work settings. The pack contains 30 photographs of ‘ordinary’ men of all ages doing the things that men do!

The objective of the photo pack was to produce a series of photographs that would represent some of the diverse faces of males in our community.  It is designed to expand our thinking about the range of behaviours, tasks and roles that men engage in and help to stimulate discussion about what it means to be male in Northern Ireland today.  The pack reminds us that men are not one-dimensional characters and encourages those who use the pack to examine their prejudices and stereotypes about men.

The beautiful photo pack was produced by Carrie Davenport, a professional photographer and one of our Man Matters tutors who took many of the shots in the pack.  Indeed Carrie has worked with many of the men pictured on courses provided through the Man Matters project!!

The photographs show men in a variety of settings and in a range of roles including men as fathers, men as friends, health and fitness, education, men and violence and men in their communities.

The pack comes with an accompanying notes booklet which sets the scene for the need for men’s work and helps to prepare the facilitator for using the photographs.  The pack lists a number of suggestions for exercises using the photographs for either the complete set of photos or a pre-selected amount.  For example, a person could be asked to select their favourite photo and explain why.  Or the participants could be asked to choose which photo most represents their idea of a ‘real man’ and explain why.

Man Matters is delighted with the result and hopes that the photo pack and accompanying notes booklet can be used time and again to enhance group work on men’s issues and also to represent the diverse aspects of men’s lives in our society today.

The photo pack and accompanying notes booklet is available for download from the Resources section of the Man Matters website.
