Holy Family Primary School win the phones4change appeal competition!

Holy Family PS won the phones4change appeal competition by collecting the most phones in the month of November. They won a class worth of tickets to see the Belfast Giants take on Dundee Stars this weekend.

Holy Family Primary School, Belfast, joined the phones4change appeal at the end of October, and since then the whole school community has been collecting old, unwanted and even broken mobile phones.  The result of their collection is that school has won the phones4change appeal competition for the month of November this year, winning a class worth of tickets to see the Belfast Giants take on Dundee Stars on 17th December!

The phones4change appeal is a major mobile phone recycling initiative being rolled out across Northern Ireland to help teachers equip their classrooms with state-of-the-art technology at no cost to the school, with proceeds supporting the Comber Foundation.  Holy Family Primary School can now choose educational equipment from an extensive product list in return for their appeal.

Holy Family Primary School’s Principal, Mrs McManus, said:

We at Holy Family Primary School are delighted that we have won the phones4change appeal competition! The appeal has given us a great opportunity to reinforce the work which we already do as an Eco School who has recently won a Green Flag, in regards to recycling and protecting our environment.  As a school which is inclusive in ethos we are delighted to support the brilliant work that the Comber Foundation is doing to improve lives of children and young people with disabilities in Romania and Eastern Europe, promoting inclusion within their community.  We would like to thank the whole school community for supporting our campaign.  We are very excited about getting our new equipment.  The pupils are really looking forward to going to see the Belfast Giants take on Dundee Stars!

The proceeds from the phones4change appeal will help the Comber Foundation to support disabled and disadvantaged children and young people in Romania and Eastern Europe.  The Comber Foundation works tirelessly to ensure that every child and young person with disabilities in Romania and Eastern Europe has full participation and inclusion in their community.  The Comber Foundation supports adults with intellectual and physical disabilities to leave institutional care and live in the community for the first time.

The Belfast Giants, Northern Ireland’s only professional ice hockey team, have chosen to endorse the phones4change appeal, recognising the essential service the appeal provides by recycling unwanted items and also the support it gives to both schools, in the new equipment, and also to the Comber Foundation.

Todd Kelman, the manager of the Belfast Giants commented on their endorsement:

We are delighted to endorse a scheme which makes such a huge difference on three different fronts.  Firstly, the phones4change appeal recycles unwanted mobile phones, which helps to protect our environment.  Secondly, the appeal helps schools to obtain much needed educational equipment.  And finally, the appeal helps support the incredible work being done by the Comber Foundation to improve the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children and young people in Romania and Eastern Europe.  We encourage schools to register for the appeal, and congratulate Holy Family Primary School on their successful appeal.
