Hips and Knees with Dr Ruth - member feedback

Saturday 18 February was a lovely sunny day, although cold. We had no sun for at least a week but Dr Ruth Gilmore brought it with her on the day of her workshop.

Over 40 people took part in this informative event which included an explanation of the structure and function of the hip joint together with a detailed look at medical conditions of the hip including hip replacement and hip resurfacing. Once this easy to follow explanation was concluded Ruth led us through a series of postures to be avoided in yoga class by those who have had hip work done.  She also detailed modifications for those with hip problems The morning session ended with an interesting 15 minute yoga sequence for joint careI’m sure it will form part of many teaching plans in the future!

After lunch and lots of chatting (it’s a great chance to catch up with former class mates) Ruth guided us to relaxation with a short Yoga Nidra; a time I’ve no doubt valued by many a yoga teacher in the room.  The afternoon session took a similar format to the morning except the emphasis was focused on those other important joints…the knees.

Ruth supported her training with simple to follow diagrams and skeleton models which those attending found very beneficial.  An invaluable handout was provided to help us cement the day’s learning and refer to it when we leave.

From the comments I overheard and those made directly to me I believe everyone attending thoroughly enjoyed the workshopRuth’s humorous and down to earth teaching style was terrific.  As a yoga teacher I will remember in future to have modifications ‘up my sleeve as Ruth put it for those with hip and knee problems.

I was delighted to learn at the end of the day Ruth will return to YFNI in September.  She will lead a workshop on women’s well-being which I’ve no doubt will prove popular both to ladies and gents teaching yoga.

The YFNI committee is delighted with the positive feedback we’ve received following our patron’s day with us.  More comments can be viewed online at www.yfni.co.uk.  Details of her workshop in September will be released over the summer so keep looking at the website for details.
