East Belfast Schoolgirl records song for IF campaign

A Belfast teenager has been singing out in a bid to end global hunger.  A song she wrote and recorded during a school workshop has been re-recorded professionally in support of the ‘Enough Food IF’ campaign.

Local cross-community organisation Beyond Skin came across Demi-Leigh Pitchforth while  delivering a Global Education workshop in Orangefield High School.  Her talent became clear when she wrote and sang a song about hunger within a 20 minute timeframe

Impressed by the song, the Beyond Skin team (partners in the IF campaign) decided to take Demi-Leigh, and a group of international musicians, into Black Swan Studios, Belfast, and to release the song to highlight the IF campaign.

Enough Food in the World for Everyone IF is a new joint multi-agency campaign that urges global leaders to end the hunger crisis that costs the lives of more than 200 children every single hour. Hunger and malnutrition will trap almost a billion young people in poverty by 2025, and in a world where there’s enough food for everyone, the scandal of children growing up hungry is unfair, unjust – and totally preventable.

The 8th March (United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace), has been scheduled for an online release of the song.

Darren Ferguson, Managing director of Beyond Skin said

“It always gives us great pleasure finding talented young people and opening opportunities for them to develop their skills whilst making a positive impact in society. What makes this so special is that unlike the some of the people who bolt themselves to these campaigns, Demi-Leigh isn't promoting a new album, book or range of perfume. She just wants to make a positive difference in the world. A true role model for young people”

Maurice Macartney, Beyond Skin’s global education officer and production musician on the song commented: ‘Demi-Leigh’s voice is incredibly strong, and so are her song writing talents, especially for someone so young.  In fact a couple of lines reminded me of Bob Dylan, but when I asked if he had been an influence she said ‘who is Bob Dylan?’.  It’s great to hear such young musicians engaging with the wider world’.

Featuring on the song are the musicians

Amita Ravikirana (India)

Donna Namukasa (Uganda)

Maurice Macartney (N. Ireland)

Keith Waterson (N. Ireland)
