The Economist is accountable for providing specialist economic knowledge and professional insights into the consumer impact of policies, and the factors driving consumer behaviour.

The Consumer Council is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) established through the General Consumer Council (Northern Ireland) Order 1984. Our principal statutory duty is to promote and safeguard the interests of consumers in Northern Ireland.

The Consumer Council has specific statutory duties in relation to energy, postal services, transport, and water and sewerage. These include considering consumer complaints and enquiries, carrying out research and educating and informing consumers.

The Economist will work to identify and study the factors influencing consumer choices, such as household consumption, finance and consumer preference, to help inform the Consumer Council’s statutory and strategic objectives. The role requires strong quantitative skills coupled with pragmatic consumer/business acumen to research and analyse the effects of consumer policies in Northern Ireland, and explain and forecast economic trends based upon that data.

Key service delivery areas include data analysis, forecasting, advocacy, communications, empowerment and protection. With a team of circa three staff, the post holder will assist in the delivery of the Consumer Council’s Corporate Plan and will be responsible for matters pertaining to economic analysis and consumer advocacy. This delivery will take the form of supporting the effective development, implementation and delivery of the annual forward work programme for economic analysis and consumer advocacy.  Its aim will be to proactively maximise the Consumer Council’s strategic objectives of empowering, representing and protecting consumers in Northern Ireland.

The individual will be responsible for developing consumer advocacy, empowerment and protection strategies in relation to economic analysis and consumer advocacy. The post holder will be the driver to ensure that the organisation delivers against its mission, values and strategic framework in the area of responsibility.
