About the organisation: TaxAid

TaxAid is a charity that helps people on low incomes when they get into difficulties with their tax affairs.

TaxAid helps people on low incomes to understand the bits of the tax system that apply to them (safely ignoring the confusing 98% that don’t), pay only the right amount of tax and help them resolve crises when things go wrong.

TaxAid was set up by tax professionals who were concerned that people on low incomes were suffering significantly because they could not afford tax advice. There was evidence that people were being made bankrupt unnecessarily on tax demands based on estimated figures; that people had been overpaying tax for years because they didn’t understand the rules; and that unrepresented people did not know how to access their rights of appeal.

Who should attend?

All money guidance practitioners who are supporting service users with diffcult conversations and anyone offering guidance to improve the financial wellbeing of the users of their service are welcome to attend this free event. Please be mindful this event will include Northern Ireland examples of Tax issues and may not be relevant to you if you are from other parts of the UK.

The Money Guidance Competency Framework

This event is designed to help you improve your money guidance practice, developing skills, confidence and knowledge around a specific money related area. Everything that the Money Guiders programme offers centres around the Money Guidance Competency Framework - it's there to help you better understand the full breadth and depth of money related issues that fall outside of the regulated financial advice service sector - the things you talk to your customers about.

Which part of the competency framework applies to the event?

Taxation Technical Domain 8: including Tier 1. Click here for full details: https://moneyandpensionsservice.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/the-money-guidance-competency-framework.pdf

Foundation Level - Signposting customers: all practitioners – no matter their job role – must be able to elicit simple, factual information from the customer in order to signpost them to appropriate sources of further support, advice or information.

Before attending this session, you could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues.
