Drumglass Park Public Art Consultation - Traders and Councilors event

Community Arts Partnership

Community Arts Partnership

Community Arts Partnership (CAP) is developing a consultative process that invites the users and neighbours of Drumglass Park to consider their needs, requirements and inspirations for a theme and brief for a public art process.

The aim of the consultation is to involve as many stakeholders and regular park users as possible to create a series of images and ideas that can be used as the basis for an artist’s brief. CAP will also inform the contributors of the outcome of the consultation.

Last Saturday, saw a public event take place in the Park, where lots of people came along and used the arts to express their ideas of what might work as public art in the location. It was a great day, filled with imagination, creativity and community interaction which reflected affection for this local area.

The next event is inviting the local Traders and Councilors to come together and share their ideas. This is taking place on Tuesday 8th September, from 12pm to 2pm (including lunch) in the Agape Centre, Lisburn Road, Belfast.

Background

Drumglass Park has been a significant part of the Cityscape of the Lisburn Road for almost a century. In that time it has become a destination for many visitors from and to Belfast. This is the chance to build on the new environmental improvement scheme that the City Council has undertaken in the Park which will involve the creation of a public art installation/ art trail.

It is anticipated that the art piece will enhance the park by creating a sense of identity, interest and community. It is also hoped that an inclusive approach to the consultation process will conclude in a suitable theme through stimulating discussion, curiosity and social interaction for those who live, work and visit in this area of the city.

Potential ideas may include:

  • Public sculptural feature(s)
  • Public art trail
  • Sensory public art installations using a variety of sound, textures, colours and lighting

Timeframe:

Following the public workshop and Traders and Councillors event, there will also be workshops in local schools in September. The Council will issue the artist brief later in the autumn.
