 A vibrant voluntary and community sector is fundamental to a healthy civil society and the health & wellbeing of the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland is dependent on the volunteers who give time to become members of Management Committees/Trustees. Their volunteer roles are pivotal in providing the leadership and accountability for all of the work and activities undertaken by thousands of organisations.

 Brian Gibson, Chairperson, VSB Foundation said;

“Given the change in charity legislation, the establishment of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland and the many challenges facing organisations and groups across the voluntary and community sector,  VSB Foundation considered it was timely to undertake a comprehensive research project that involved  asking Committee Members/Trustees and organisations their views”

 Speaking at the launch of this report, Wendy Osborne CEO Volunteer Now said;

“Over 33,000 individuals volunteer their time to be involved as committee members with voluntary and community groups and organisations.   The difficulty in finding new volunteers and no change in the diversity of these committees suggests we are moving towards a recruitment crises.  This research highlights that attention needs to be given now to support good governance for the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.”
