Build a Beach’ for Belfast is up for the People’s Millions Lottery UTV vote

Titanic Foundation have been shortlisted for The People’s Millions ITV Competition for £50,000 towards building a beach within reach located in the heart of Titanic Quarter.

Creating a friendly, healthy place easy to get to on foot, bike, bus and car for local residents, workers & students as well as visiting tourists. A safe place for neighboring communities to bring their children to play, to socialize and of course enjoy ice-cream

The ‘Build a Beach’ project will make a bid for UTV viewers support to win the £50,000, with the public voting by phone to decide who wins the prize. On Monday 24 November  Titanic Foundation will highlight on UTV its ‘Build a Beach’ project which will not only be a shared space for Belfast and the people of NI but a venue for sporting, cultural and educational events and activities from beach volleyball to building giant sand castles to playing life size board games. There will be beach huts – a must for our Belfast climate. Plus the perfect location to welcome the arrival of the Tall Ships in July 2015.

Titanic Foundation Destination Manager, Maeve Curran, highlighted; ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for Northern Ireland. In Europe, urban beaches are fast becoming established and in 2013 Paris Plage attracted 3 million people. Many urban beaches are popping up in cities across the UK from Southbank, Cardiff, Newcastle, Liverpool to Birmingham and Bristol.  We want to bring a little bit of seaside to the city and with an ideal location next to our World Class Visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast.

Maeve went onto say,  ‘We will work with local primary schools across Belfast in the design process and recruit, train and work with a team of volunteers who will help with regular beach maintenance and assist with the organisation of beach events and activities. A place that will engage with and attract local communities, providing a space that belongs to everyone.’

The Build a Beach project will face the vote on Monday 24th November and the public will have from 9am to 12 midnight that day to cast their vote. The project will be featured on UTV Live at Six programme on the day and also in the Daily Mirror which will include the voting phone number.   Click here for further voting details.
