Volunteer: Group Support Volunteer, Bangor Carer Support Group

Our Bangor Carer Support Groups meets to provide carers with an opportunity to meet in a safe and secure environment to give and receive peer support to help them in their caring role. Can you spare a few hours a month to help out?

Where, when and how often?
The Bangor Carer Support Group meets the second Tuesday of the month from 7:30pm - 9pm in Millbrook Court Day Centre, Bangor, Co. Down.

What will I be doing?

You will be welcoming people with dementia and their carers to the support group which provides a platform to talk openly within a relaxed and informal atmosphere. You will help staff, serve refreshments, engage in supportive discussions and conversations and generally ensure people with dementia and their carers have a good time within a caring and safe environment.

If you have a welcoming, compassionate and supportive attitude, this could be the ideal role for you.

Is this role for me?

No special qualifications or experience are needed but this role may be ideal for you if you:

- Have an interest in volunteering to support people with dementia;

- Have a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about, dementia and how it can affect individuals, their families and carers;

- Possess good listening and communication skills;

- Are able to be calm, patient and caring;

- Are able to show empathy and support;

- Are punctual and reliable;

- Have an understanding of, and commitment to, confidentiality;

- Are willing to learn about, and be committed to, the Society's values and principles;

- Are committed to teamwork with volunteers and staff from a variety of backgrounds;

- Are committed to attend relevant learning and development workshops; and

- Can travel independently.  

How will I be supported during my volunteering?

Alzheimer's Society is committed to supporting volunteers in whatever role is carried out. For this role, you will be supported by the local Dementia Support Worker. You will be provided with one-to-one and/or group based support and will be reimbursed your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, in accordance with Society policy.
