Guide Dogs Northern Ireland

Can you spare a couple of hours of your time to do something worthwhile?

We’re looking for volunteer sighted guides, who help blind and partially-sighted people feel less isolated and become more involved in their local communities.  You can support someone in a wide range of everyday activities including: going for coffee, shopping or going for a walk. 

We will provide you with the skills and confidence to guide someone safely, offer ongoing support and reimburse out of pocket expenses. 

No matter how much time you can give you will be making a difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people in your local community.

What does it involve?

You will be partnered with a visually impaired person for 2-3 hours per week for 3 - 6 months.  During this time you will:

  • guide your partner to take part in social or leisure activities such as walks, going for coffee etc
  • help your partner establish lasting relationships with community members who can in turn help them get out more
  • work with your partner to achieve clear goals that help them become independant

We currently have My Guide volunteer vacancies throughout Northern Ireland but we would particularly welcome volunteeers in the following areas

Belfast  Coleraine Omagh  L/Derry  Strabane

What support will I receive?

  • Volunteer welcome meeting
  • Sighted Guide Training (Levels 1 and 2)
  • Safeguarding induction and awareness day.
  • Payment of all out of pocket expenses

This role will require an Access NI disclosure.

 Every hour, another person in the UK goes blind.  When someone loses their sight, the charity Guide Dogs is here to make sure they don’t lose their freedom as well.
