Macmillan Community Helper Volunteer Role

Macmillan Cancer Support

People tell us they need practical and emotional support during their cancer journey and they want help locally. We have services of Macmillan Community Helpers across several areas in Northern Ireland which we’d love you to be a part of.

We are looking for volunteers for Macmillan Community Helpers in Belfast, North Down and Ards, Lisburn and South Down, Armagh, Craigavon and Newry and East and North Antrim.

Volunteers can help to make life easier by visiting people affected by cancer regularly and doing housework, shopping or simply by having a chat and listening to how they are feeling.

What activities will/could I be involved in?   The role involves listening and talking to people with/affected by cancer which may help to reduce their isolation and increase their confidence and self-esteem.  The role will also include providing practical support in the home, such as shopping, vacuuming, washing, ironing and cooking.  Activities will be agreed with the individual and you.  You will be provided with training and support to help you and information from Macmillan to assist you when working with someone affected by cancer.

How much time should I offer?

A flexible time commitment (usually around 2 hours per week) depending on what suits you and the requirements of the people we support.  You will need to be able to make a regular commitment and we hope that you will be able to volunteer for at least a year.
