Background to the project

Headway Unit is an innovative approach to support young people to engage with education at a meaningful level, and also help encourage and motivate those who struggle to engage.  It challenges the conventional approaches traditionally used to work with young offenders.

Service provision on Headway Unit will be bespoke and needs led for each individual, providing much needed support in a central location. The landings will be operated from a supportive perspective, appropriately challenging young people where needed and providing encouragement and support to engage.

Headway Unit will provide an intensive 12 week structured programme delivered in a specialised unit within the college complex for those young people who are unmotivated and/or non-compliant. Aspects of the programme will be accredited on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).  Group work intervention will be aimed at two core areas, Vocational Skills and Community Independence.

The staff model will be made up of Start360 and NIPS, working together to provide a holistic model of intervention.  Each discipline will take the lead in their areas of expertise but joint working will be expected to ensure continuity and consistency of approach.  This partnership approach will support the reduction of risk and provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to implement appropriate protective factors.

Assessment, monitoring and evaluation will be a key aspect of the programme in which each student will play a full and active role.

Staff identified to facilitate this new approach are required to be equipped with the tools and skills to continuously engage and help motivate students to participate in constructive activity rather than destructive behaviours resulting in punishment and further decline into negative cycles.
