Shelter NI was established in 1980, as a charity we campaign to combat homelessness and provide services to prevent homelessness and meet the needs of homeless people.

Shelter NI was established in 1980, as a charity we campaign to combat homelessness and provide services to prevent homelessness and meet the needs of homeless people. We help older and disabled people to make their home suitable for independent living by assisting with the Disabled Facilities Grant documentation and professional help. We mediate with contractors in disputes. This prevents the risk of homelessness for 4-500 households per year. Currently the project is centred in Strabane and operates throughout Strabane, L’Derry, Magherafelt and Limavady Council Areas. We measure satisfaction rates for our service and we gather data to support our campaigning. This project is known as GABLE. We support young homeless people 16-25 prepare for independent living, through the provision of skills for living and employment or training, reducing their risk of poverty and cyclical homelessness. Currently we aid 35 young people per year, this project is centred in Omagh and has the local name of SLATE .

Shelter NI

To celebrate Shelter NI’s 40th anniversary this year, we are hosting an online panel discussion with the Imagine Belfast Festival of Politics and Ideas on common misconceptions of homelessness, what issues homeless organisations are facing during this time, how they are planning to continue to provide support for homeless people, and most importantly – what you can do to help! Speaking at the event will be a panel of experienced professionals, from managers of homeless support networks in the UK to those working on the frontlines. If you’d like to find out more, there will be a chance to submit questions at the end in an interactive live format.
