Probation Board for Northern Ireland

The Probation Board is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) of the Department of Justice (DOJ), which is a Northern Ireland Department that came into existence on 12 April 2010 and was established by the Department of Justice Act (Northern Ireland) 2010.It has a range of devolved policing and justice functions, set out in the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (Devolution of Policing and Justice Functions) Order 2010.

The main strands of our work are to:

• Assess convicted offenders and annually prepare over 10,000 reports for Courts, Parole Commissioners and others.
• Supervise over 4,400 offenders subject to a range of court orders and licences at any given time.
• Deliver behavioural change programmes for offenders in custody and in the community covering areas
  such as violent offending, sexual offending and drug and alcohol misuse.
• Provide a Victim Information Scheme to any person who has been the direct victim of a criminal offence where the offender is subject to supervision by PBNI.
• Work alongside statutory and other partners to minimise the risk of harm posed by offen

 PBNI in the Community

 The Community Service scheme enjoys extensive partnerships throughout the Northern Ireland community. Currently offenders carry out their community service hours in approximately 200 community based locations performing a wide range of tasks, for example; environmental work including gardening and general maintenance, assisting in charity shops, redecoration of community facilities, private homes, care taking and cleaning duties, football coaching, assisting in luncheon clubs for elderly. PBNI has supported these partnerships by providing Community and Voluntary sector funding to a range of organisations.
