Volunteer: Volunteer Advocate, Lisburn

Where, when and how often?

Volunteer Advocates give a few hours weekly or fortnightly. This role takes place at Lagan Valley Hospital, Lisburn.

What will I be doing?

Volunteer Advocates enable people with dementia and those who care for them to have a voice in the decisions made regarding the provision of personal health and social care services to meet their individual needs. Volunteers in this role visit a local care home to provide independent advocacy for the residents and patients.

Is this role for me?

No special qualifications or experience are needed for this role, but the role may be ideal for you if: - You know about, or are willing to learn about, dementia and its impact on people - You have experience of interacting with the health and social care system - You have excellent verbal communication skills and listening skills - You can show empathy, patience, consideration and a caring nature - You recognise that the views you are representing may be different to yours - You are happy to volunteer in isolation, yet understand you are part of a team - You recognise the importance of confidentiality, and can show this in practice - You are committed to inclusion, treating people from all backgrounds with dignity - You are comfortable in attending future development and support meetings.

Volunteers for this opportunity must be over 18 and will be required to undergo an Access NI Disclosure. This is of no cost to the volunteer.

How will I be supported during my volunteering?

Alzheimer's Society is committed to supporting volunteers in whatever role is carried out. For this role, you will be supported by an Advocacy staff member. We provide full training on what advocacy is and the role specific elements of the volunteering opportunity. You also will be provided with one-to-one and/or group based support and will be reimbursed your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, in accordance with Society policy.
