Volunteer: Side by Side Volunteer, Draperstown

Where, when and how often?

Our Side by Side Volunteers offer a few hours weekly or fortnightly to provide companionship for people with dementia on a one to one basis either in their home or in their local community. Ideally you will be able to provide continuity over a minimum of six months.

What will I be doing?

Side by Side Volunteers support people living with dementia in the local community. This involves companionship for a person in the early stages of dementia helping them to take part in social and recreational activities. Your support will help to significantly improve their well-being whilst reducing the risk of isolation so often experienced by people living with dementia. For a more detailed role description, please contact the Volunteering Officer using the details below.

Is this role for me?

This role may be ideal for you if you:-

- Know about, or are willing to learn about, dementia and its impact on people;

- Have good verbal communication and listening skills, especially face to face;

- Recognise the importance of confidentiality and can show this in practice;

- Are prepared to undergo an induction into the role and attend necessary training and similar learning activities to help you in your role;

- Are keen to provide a high standard of service;

- Are comfortable following policies, procedures and guidance;

- Are committed to inclusion, treating people from all backgrounds with dignity; and

- Are comfortable in attending future support meetings.

How will I be supported during my volunteering?

Alzheimer's Society is committed to supporting volunteers in whatever role is carried out. For this role, you will be supported by the local Side by Side Manager. You will receive relevant induction and training for the role. You also will be provided with one-to-one and/or group based support and will be reimbursed your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, in accordance with Society policy.
