A new Zest for Life programme has been launched by the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) in partnership with LILAC Cancer Support for cancer patients in the Cookstown area.

This is a six week personal development programme which is designed to meet the needs of those who are on a recovery period in their cancer journey.

Starting on Wednesday 29th February 2012, the programme will take place at LILAC,14 Union Street, Cookstown, from 10.30am to 1.00pm for six consecutive weeks.

Zest for Life will be facilitated by UCF’s locally based counsellor, Mavis Duggan, who said, “The course can help people who have experienced a cancer diagnosis to identify and implement lifestyle changes which will have a positive impact on their physical and mental health.

“Everyone is unique and we understand that cancer affects everyone differently. Cancer can make people feel that they have lost control; increase feelings of isolation and it can often reduce a person’s self-esteem.  Zest for Life aims to help people to understand and manage stress, encourage positive thinking, adopt relaxation techniques and explore complementary therapies.

“By identifying personal values and realistic goal setting, people often regain a sense of balance and become empowered and motivated to move forward and embrace the future.

“I have carried out this programme in other venues acrossNorthern Irelandand those who took part agreed it was very enjoyable and extremely worthwhile.”

Helen Jordon, Project Worker, LILAC Cancer Support added, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Ulster Cancer Foundation to provide the Zest for Life course in the local community.  We would encourage cancer patients to come along to this life-changing and motivational course.  We are sure everyone who participates will go away inspired and looking positively to the future.”

UCF is currently able to offer a spring series of Zest for Life programmes with thanks to the Big Lottery Fund Healthy Minds Grant. Zest for Life is entirely confidential and takes place in a safe and caring environment. Materials will be provided for participants and like all UCF services, the programme is free of charge.
