Smoking Linked to Oesophageal Cancer

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) said that research findings released today into oesophageal cancer further underlined the dangers of smoking.

The research, funded by UCF and carried out at Queen’s University Belfast and the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry, showed that smoking doubles the risk of developing oesophageal cancer in people with Barrett’s Oesophagus.

In Northern Ireland more than 11,000 people were diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus between 1993 and 2008.  Barrett’s Oesophagus develops as a result of experiencing acid reflux or heartburn over a prolonged period of time.

Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention at UCF, said, “Stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do to improve your health. The results of this latest research show just how important it is to encourage smokers to give up their habit.

“There is plenty of support available for smokers who want to quit.  UCF operate the Smokers’ Helpline - 0808 812 8008 – which is an excellent starting point for any quit attempt.

“The helpline is manned by our staff who help smokers through the process of giving up smoking.  They provide useful practical tips, a free Quit Kit, general stop smoking advice, and information on where support is available in their local area.  Every caller is provided with information that is tailored to their individual needs.

“The Smoker’s Helpline is free to call from landlines and can be contacted Monday to Friday 11am to 7pm.

“At UCF we are working more closely than ever with smokers who want to stop.  We provide weekly stop smoking support services in a number of settings including GP practices, community centres and workplaces.  These services are funded by the Public Health Agency (Eastern Area) and are free and confidential.

“Our stop smoking services are very informal and offer individual and group support.  We have provided almost 30 clinics at numerous venues in the last year and helped over 50% of those attending to stop smoking within four weeks.”
