Consumer Council Urges Vulnerable Consumers To Avail Of Extra Support From Utility Providers.

The Consumer Council is urging vulnerable consumers who might need additional support in the event of a loss of electricity, gas or water supply to make sure that they are on the Critical Care Registers and Customer Care Registers held by NI Water, electricity and gas companies.

Customer Care Registers offer services such as bills in large print and Braille, and password schemes to identify representatives calling at your door.

Critical Care Registers are provided by Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) and NI Water.  The register is for customers who rely on electrical equipment or on a water supply for their day to day care.  This means they will prioritise you in the event of any planned or unplanned interruptions to either your electricity or water supply.  NI Water will also arrange an alternative water supply in the event of a prolonged loss of service.

Signing up for these services is free and all you have to do is contact your electricity, gas and water suppliers.  Each company has a separate list so you will need to contact each one individually.  Alternatively if you know anyone who might benefit from being on the registers, please encourage them to sign up.

For more information contact your supplier or alternatively visit the Consumer Council website www.consumercouncil.org.uk/energy or call 0800 121 6022.
