POST TITLE:             Centre Based Youth Worker I

 

 

LOCATION:                LISBURN YMCA

                                   28 Market Square

                                    Lisburn

 

 

HOURS:                     Successful applicants will be required to work a total of 36 hours per week (10 sessions).  Four sessions must be worked in the evening (after 6 pm) in a face to face situation with young people/adults.  Regular weekend commitments will also be necessary for the successful achievement of the post’s objectives.

RESPONSIBLE TO:              YMCA Management Board

 

RESPONSIBLE FOR:  The development and delivery of the agreed units programmes, the management of appropriate staff/volunteers and the implementation of ELB/organisational policies. 

 

JOB PURPOSE

 

The Youth Worker will have responsibility for the management of the Youth Centre and will maximise the use of the Centre by young people for agreed purposes, in line with board policies.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1          Managing & Developing a Range of Services at Unit Level

 

1.1       To work directly with young people by assessing their needs and providing an agreed programme of activities designed to meet those needs, in line with the Youth Service Curriculum forNorthern Ireland.

 

1.2       To develop an Annual Action Plan for the unit and actively contribute to the overall strategic plan for the Youth Service.

 

1.3       Ensure the active participation of young people in the youth work programme and in the management of the centre.

 

1.4       In consultation with the YMCA Executive Board and line manager ensure that objectives are achieved through implementation, monitoring and self evaluation of agreed work programmes.

 

1.5       Establish contact with, listen to, befriend, advise, support and act as an advocate for young people.

1.6       Encourage and participate in the residential and outdoor education elements of the programme.

 

1.7       Promote and develop inter-community activities.

 

1.8       Be responsible to the line manager for all management, administration and financial matters relevant to the Youth Centre.

 

1.9       To engage in appropriate fund raising related directly to the approved programme.

 

2          Developing Staff and Facilities at Unit Level

 

2.1       Work with staff and volunteers to develop, implement, manage and evaluate programmes of activities, services and facilities in line with the agreed priorities for the centre.

               

2.2       Ensure the induction, motivation, development, training, deployment and discipline of Youth Centre staff (paid and voluntary).

 

3          Working with Agencies to Develop Services across the Community at Unit Level

 

3.1       Work with relevant agencies to develop services within the centre and at local community level.

 

4          Leading Project Development and Implementation at Unit Level

 

4.1       In line with agreed priorities design and implement specific curriculum related projects at unit level.

 

5          Management Responsibility for Staff at Unit Level

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

 

QUALIFICATIONSANDEXPERIENCE

 

Essential

 

Applicants must:

 

1)                  Be qualified in accordance with theJNCReport for Youth Workers, Paragraph 5

AND

2)       Be able to demonstrate 12 month’s youth work experience within the last 5 years’ within a range of youth work situations

AND

3)         Have access to a suitable vehicle (appropriately maintained and insured for YMCA business) or other suitable form of transport which will enable the successful candidate to fulfil the requirements of the post to the satisfaction of the YMCA and Education and Library Board.

 

Preferred

It is preferred that the candidate has significant post qualifying experience.

It is preferred that applicants have experience of support and supervision of volunteers and/part time staff.

It is preferred that applicants hold a license to drive a minibus.

 

The criteria may be enhanced.

TEMPORARY CONTRACT

 

The temporary contract will end on the due date or earlier, by one week’s notice in writing, if the Board, for any valid reason, so decides.  No period of notice other than that implicit in the contract will be required to bring the contract to an end on that date.

 

TRAVELLINGANDSUBSISTENCE

 

Travel expenses at rates approved by the YMCA Executive Board will be paid in respect of approved journeys necessary.

 

TRAVELLING AND DISTURBANCE

 

The successful candidate, if in receipt of an excess mileage allowance, will cease to be eligible for the payment on appointment to the post.

 

MOBILITY CLAUSE

 

The post will be located in Lisburn YMCA or at any alternative premises as may be reasonably required.

This post is funded through the SEELB and is temporary until 31st march 2013 – this contract may be subject to extension or may be reduced for any valid reason if it is so decided.
