  • How do we work?

    Action for Children does what is right, does what is needed and does what works for children in the UK. Every year, our team changes the lives of 301,000 children, young people and families.

     

    Our Young Adult Carers Support service is a new initiative across Northern Ireland. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, Empowering Young People and delivered by Action for Children, we aim to raise awareness of Young Adult Carers with Health and Social Care Trusts, Community groups and other statutory services to help identify young adult carers and offer them support.

     

    As well as raising awareness in other agencies to identify young adult carers you'll also work closely with our existing Young Carers Service to help young people turning 18 transition to adult support.

     

    This role will be based in Belfast to cover the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust area. You'll be working 22.2 hours a week and, although there can be flexibility around the hours, they will involve evening work to meet the needs of the carers and the service.

     

    How will you make a difference?

    By helping to get the service up and running

    By offering young adult carers a range of support services including fun activities, groups work programmes or 1-1 support to assist with their needs such as education, work, health and social life

    By identifying and supporting peer mentors

    By being responsible for devising support packages to meet the needs of young adult carers

    By travelling throughout the area to meet the needs of the service

    By working closely with agencies such as the Health and Social Care Trusts, Community groups etc. to promote the service, raise awareness and help them to identify young adult carers in need of support

     

    What will you need?

    • NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care, child-care, youth work or equivalent
    • Extensive experience of working with children or young people aged 16+
    • Experience of planning, setting up and delivering group work programmes
    • Experience of providing 1-1 support
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with people at all levels
    • The ability to work on your own initiative but also as part of a wider team
    • Access to a car and the ability to drive. The job requires the ability to travel according to the needs of the job, with reasonable adjustments, if required, according to the Equality Act
    • The willingness to register with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council if not so already.
