The Ulster Orchestra, Colin Neighbourhood Partnership and Shankill Children’s Zone are seeking experienced and qualified music tutors to be part of the pilot phase of an exciting new initiative. Inspired by the success of orchestra school partnerships in Glasgow (“Big Noise”) and Liverpool (“In Harmony”), the partners’ vision is to improve outcomes for children through music.

The project aims to increase the resilience, aspirations and emotional development of children from areas of social and economic disadvantage through a programme of music skills development, which will increase participants’ musical skills while contributing to their improved wellbeing and self-worth.

Situated in four schools in north and west Belfast, the project aims to deliver weekly workshops with P1 classes to develop fundamental music skills including rhythm and pitch, before progressing to learning orchestral instruments in subsequent years.

The pilot project is set to run weekly from late Jan – March 17, with the intention of extending it until June 17. We are now looking for motivated and committed freelance associates to be involved.

Responsibilities:

Each freelance associate will be responsible for leading one series of workshops in each school. They will coordinate additional contributions to the programme from third level music students, and from Ulster Orchestra players within their orchestral schedule. The project will follow an overarching structure and series of lesson plans which will align to the overall project strategy document. However, each associate will be expected to carry out their own individual preparation, adapt their teaching as necessary to the needs of their participating classes and contribute to the further development of the project.

Evaluation and Monitoring:

Evaluation and monitoring of the pilot project will be carried out by project partners in association with the Centre for Evidence and Social Innovation at Queen’s University, Belfast. Freelance associates will be expected to contribute fully to the evaluation process, including self-evaluation and tracking of participants’ progress.

Skills and Experience:

The Freelance Associate role will require:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in music, music performance and/ or music teaching
  • Flexibility of approach to learning, and an ability to motivate learners of varying abilities
  • A commitment to the social aims of the project
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience of working alongside teachers/other professionals
  • Desirable: Experience of lesson planning and evaluation
  • Desirable: Experience of leading or co-leading workshops or lessons in a group music tuition context
  • Awareness of the primary school curriculum in Northern Ireland

Freelance Associate Fee:

£35 per hour. It is anticipated that workshops will run weekly within the school term from the end of January to June 17 and the planning, delivery and evaluation of each session will comprise approximately 2-3 hours.

Associates will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance Contributions and holiday/ sick pay will not be payable.
