Women’s Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) would like to invite women in the Newry and South Armagh area to a workshop entitled “Women: Domestic and Sexual Violence” in Newry on Tuesday 12th June from 10:30am – 1:30pm, at the Canal Court Hotel (Tea/Coffee and lunch will be provided). An invitation and agenda are attached. Please RSVP as soon as possible to [email protected] or phone 028 9023 0212.

WRDA is a partner in a Peace 3 project that aims to capture the experiences of women living through conflict and through the subsequent period of conflict resolution and peace building.

At this workshop, we want to explore concerns around the broad question of domestic and sexual violence – what does domestic and sexual violence encompass?   As women, how can we work to eliminate gender-based violence?   What are the issues that are now most important to women regarding their own personal safety and that of their families? Are there lessons to be learned  from the conflict in Northern Ireland, for example on the ways in which the police and help providers responded to women experiencing domestic and sexual violence?

Monica McWilliams will present an overview of some of the most important issues that relate to the experience of women affected by domestic and/or sexual violence. After that, women in round tables will be facilitated to reflect on what they have heard and to voice their own views.

Through these workshops, we hope to be able to consider the development of peace building strategies appropriate to the various stages of conflict from the point of view of women’s experiences.
