Teaching Young People with Autism to Stay Safe

This course is based on the Autism NI youth programme ‘Skills for Staying Safe’ which teaches young people with Autism more about the social and life skills needed to stay safe in various contexts.

Course aimed at: Professionals who work directly with young people with Autism in a youth group or mentoring role, for example, youth group facilitators, teachers, classroom assistants, and Afterschool club facilitators.

 

Course Objectives:

This course will explore the key characteristics of Autism that may impact on the individual when engaging within a youth setting, and explore a range of strategies that can be used to support a young person with Autism in that setting. The course includes:

  • The key characteristics of Autism and how this may impact a young person with Autism
  • Structuring a youth setting for an individual with Autism
  • Building social skills for an individual with Autism to engage in a youth setting
  • How to teach complex safety messages to young people with Autism

 

The course includes a full ‘Skills for Staying Safe’ resource pack, manual and CD which details a range of practical activities and ideas to engage young people with Autism while teaching safety skills.
