St Patrick's Day Sponsored Walk

The registration point for this beautiful walk is at Castle Ward between 10am and 10.30am on Saturday 17 March 2012.  Castle Ward is a magnificent 18th century gothic National Trust mansion overlooking Strangford Lough.  Inside the beautiful 820 acre walled demesne you will find an exotic sunken garden and paths that wind their way through woodland and suddenly open onto the quiet shores of the Lough.

The breathtaking ramble amidst some of Northern Ireland’s most beautiful scenery is jointly organized by Down District Council and the Lecale Ramblers and promises to be a day to remember. 

Castle Ward House and Grounds: Entry to both the house and grounds will be free of charge on St Patrick’s Day to those undertaking the walk. Music will be available in the House between 12 noon and 3pm.

Distance: Two looped routes are available at 15km and 18.5km approximately. Please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing and footwear as the lanes may be muddy underfoot.

Parking: Please try, where possible, to share cars as there is limited car parking available.

Refreshments/Toilets: The Coffee Shop in the Stable Yard at Castleward will be open for refreshments. If you wish, bring a packed lunch. Toilets will also be available at the start point and the refreshment point.

Note: Please ensure that you are fit enough to undertake the route you choose. There may be stiles to climb on the route. Ensure that you wear warm and waterproof brightly coloured clothing and sturdy footwear as the off-road sections can be very muddy and wet. Please also have sun protection and drinking water. The lanes are not suitable for buggies or pushchairs.
