Social Economy Conversations
Community Foundation for Northern Ireland
The Building Change Trust will lead on a series of regional conversations on the Social Economy in Northern Ireland. The events (hosted by key practitioners and interst groups) will be held in Fermanagh, Derry and Belfast on the 24th, 25th & 26th January.
THE BUILDING CHANGE TRUST: SOCIAL ECONOMY CONVERSATIONS
The Building Change Trust is interested in the ongoing discussion around the Social Economy and in knowing what is necessary to stimulate action and growth within it. The Trust has a strategic focus on change and, taking account of the environment in which we presently operate, on ensuring that its resources are utilised to enable and support change for sustainable development in the community and voluntary sector.
In taking this interest forward, the Trust through its ‘Added Value Programme’ will facilitate a series of conversations across NI. At these conversations we will engage with a range of stakeholders working within and providing support to the community and voluntary or third sector to explore our understanding of what constitutes the Social Economy and how it might be developed. That may include an assessment of
- The values and principles that underpin the focus of our work, how we work and the communities we serve
- The sectors relationship with grant funding and the realm of new possibilities in finance, investment and trading
- Better collaboration, sustainability, asset ownership
The Trust anticipates that these sessions should help it come to a shared understanding of what the Social Economy is, and to make a fuller assessment of what is required to promote and enhance the sector’s effectiveness. This might include development support interventions, direct investment, loan finance and appropriate statutory recognition. This information may in turn be used to inform forthcoming programmes in development by the Trust.
