HSE and HSA recent figures show that roughly 35% of reported accidents, causing an absence from work for more than 3 days, involve manual handling. Besides the obvious accidents that are reported, a great many people suffer from disabling injuries that occur cumulatively over the year.

This one day in-house course instructs employees in the theory and practice of safe manual handling. Special attention and advice is given to types of loads commonly handled in the workplace

Employers Obligations.

The employer must assess the manual handling operations that their staff carry out. If risks are assessed, steps must be taken out to reduce the potential risk of injury to the lowest reasonably practicable level.

The employer must provide safe equipment and a safe place to work for all employees as far as is reasonably practicable.

The employer must provide training to enable staff to carry out their jobs safely.

No employer may demand that a task be carried out by a person who is not fit or able to do it safely

“It should not be assumed that the provision of information and training alone will ensure safe manual handling. However, as a complement to a safe system of work, rather than a substitute for it, effective training has an important part to play in reducing the risk of manual handling injury.”

• Relevant Legislation: Health and Safety at Work Act (NI) Order 1974/8, Health Safety and Welfare Act 2005 ROI, General Application Regulations ROI, Manual Handling Operation Regulations 1992, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regs (NI) 2000.
• Rudiments of spinal mechanics and causes of back pain
• Principles of efficient body movement and posture
• Introduction to risk assessment
• Principles of safer handling of loads
• Principles of safer handling of clients
• Controversial or unsafe manoeuvres
• Practical session using a hoist, range of manual handling equipment

This course is certified by Health Matters and meets the standards set by RQIA. Certificates are valid for 1 year.
